Im Receives Patents on Advanced Laser-Crystallization of Si Films

Dec 30 1996

Prof. James Im received the first of many patents on advanced laser-crystallization of Si films; several companies have subsequently licensed the technology, and the high-resolution screens manufactured using the inventions have gone into products from Apple, Blackberry, Nokia, and Samsung, among others.

The resulting Si films form the base semiconducting layer for the fabrication of thin-film transistors (TFTs), which control the pixels in active-matrix liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and Organic Light-Emitting Diode Displays (OLEDs).
