New Faculty: Gerald Navratil, Assistant Professor of Engineering Science
Gerald Navratil joined Columbia University as a new Assistant Professor of Engineering Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1977.
In 1978, he helped establish what is now the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, where he served as department chair more than 10 years from 1988 to 1994 and from 1997 to 2000. He served as acting vice dean in 1995. He earned his bachelor's degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in plasma physics from the University of Wisconsin. In 1989, he was named a fellow of the American Physical Society.
