Doctoral and Master's Programs

The Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics offers graduate study leading to the degrees of Master of Science (M.S.), Doctor of Engineering Science (Eng.Sc.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D).

  • We are a uniquely-structured department

  • Doctoral students decide on their research advisor over the course of their first year and must join a research group at the end of their second semester

  • Culture of multidisciplinary research within the department and with other departments

  • Our cross-cutting themes address key and emerging areas in society, such as energy, environment, and health

Financial aid is available for students pursuing a doctorate. Fellowships, scholarships, teaching assistantships, and graduate research assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis. The Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examination is required of candidates for admission to the department and for financial aid; the Advanced Tests are recommended. Ethics training is required of all students pursuing a doctorate.
